How to make your own Christmas foliage candle

Our step-by-step tutorial uses seasonal foliage to give pillar candles a charming Christmas makeover

Published: September 29, 2022 at 2:01 pm

Why not give a plain pillar candle a festive makeover using foliage? With the help of expert florist Lucy Silverthorne, we'll show you how to dress up your candles using seasonal greenery and ribbon.

It's also a great way of using up odds and ends of foliage from other crafting projects, like our natural Christmas wreath.

How to make a Christmas foliage candle

You’ll need:

  • Pillar candles
  • Elastic bands
  • Ribbon in 2 different widths
  • Sticky tape
  • Scissors
  • Foliage - we're using conifer, ivy, skimmia, variegated holly, eucalyptus and olive

Step 1

Cut your foliage into pieces, which are approx ¾ of the height of your candles.

Step 2

Place an elastic band around the middle of each candle. Begin by placing stems of foliage under the elastic band (placing the stem end at the base of the candle) continuing all the way around until you are back where you started.

Step 3

Pick the candle up and trim the stems, making sure they do not protrude below the base, this will ensure the candle is stable.

Step 4

Take the wider ribbon and wrap it around the middle of the candle, so it covers the elastic band, secure with a piece of tape. Take the narrower ribbon and wrap it around your candle, so it sits in the middle of the wider ribbon. Secure in place with a simple knot and bow. Trim the ends of the ribbon for a neat finish.

Don’t forget, never leave a burning candle unattended, and be extra careful around children or pets.
