If you live in a busy household with kids and pets, chances are you’ll need a paint finish that you can wipe clean from time to time to remove, mud, scuffs, and even the kids’ doodles!

Specially designed washable or scrubbable paints have been developed using more durable formulations than regular emulsion and are designed to withstand washing with soapy water without any detrimental effect on the paint finish.

Although most washable paints come in a basic matt finish, some brands do offer a choice of mid-sheen and silk finishes too. And, if you’re after a very specific shade, do be aware than the choice of colours for most washable paints is usually more limited than regular emulsions.

How we tested washable paints...

We put a selection of washable paints to the test from the most prominent players in the market to see which lived up to their claims.

We considered everything from the odour to the VOCs in the paint, the coverage and application, as well as if the product offered good value for money.

All the paints we tested were pure brilliant white with a matt finish and we painted them all on the same surface and tested each one with the same common problems: oil-based crayons, mud and scuffs from footwear (pictured right).
