If you've been keeping up to date with the latest fashion trends and TikTok interior obsessions, then you'll likely have heard of Mermaidcore, the latest aesthetic following a lineup of other niche styles like coastal grandma and Barbiecore. And thanks to the release of Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, our inboxes are well and truly flooded with pearly interior gems inspired by the movie.

You can tap into the Mermaidcore trend with a range of cute homeware accessories, or go large with a statement furniture item or decor project such as retiling (scallop tiles are a thing!). But before we dive into our favourite mermaid homewares, let's break down exactly what this subaquatic style is.

What is Mermaidcore?

Deep Sea Sanctuary Wayfair

Helena Davies, Head of Home Buying at Barker and Stonehouse reveals what the trend is and how you can incorporate it into your home...

'Mermaidcore is the perfect balance of whimsical and nostalgic. A good place to start is by using colour: pink, purple, green, blue and neutral/iridescent tones are the core colours at the heart of this trend.'

'The next step is to add shape. When thinking of furniture, including sofas and chairs with scalloped edges and curves will perfectly reflect the shells that live in the ocean.'

'To finish off the room you want to add small ‘trinkets’ - circular, coloured glass vases are great accessories and create a feeling of texture, an ocean-scented candle can finish the space off perfectly and make you feel as though you’re right there on the beach.'

Mermaidcore homewares we're coveting

Scalloped Natural Jute Area Rug

Gautam International Scalloped Natural Jute Area Rug

Starting from the ground up, consider adding a cosy, textural rug to your scheme.

This neutral, scalloped-edge rug from Amazon is a subtle way of tapping into the Mermaidcore trend and works a treat in a range of homes from period-style interiors to more modern abodes. Its earthy colour makes it a great canvas for more sparkly, iridescent accessories to stand out against.

It's handmade from natural fibres and comes in a range of sizes, from a small zonal rug size to a large statement dining and living room rug size.

Mermaidcore inspiration at home: ‘We’ve designed the home of our dreams’

‘I love the shell mirror as it adds to the overall look, but I also love my pink painted toilet… who wouldn’t?’

Festonia Scalloped Metal Ceiling Light

Festonia Scalloped Metal Ceiling Light

Another gentle nod to the underwater trend is this dainty scalloped-edge ceiling light from La Redoute. The bulb in the shell-shaped shade is a playful twist on a pearl in an oyster, while the metal lampshade and twisted rope cable are reminiscent of seaside textures.

Its dinky size - it's 25cm in width - makes it a charming addition to a small dining area. Let it hang low over the table for atmospheric lighting as the sun sets, or add a couple above a breakfast bar for chic kitchen-diner vibes.

It has an E27 socket suitable for an energy-efficient LED bulb.

Amber Pearl Textured Wine Drinking Glasses

G Decor Set Of 4 Lustre Amber Pearl Hammered Textured Wine Drinking Glasses

Mermaids meet bottomless brunch in these pretty handmade wine glasses from G Decor on Etsy. The hammered design technique gives each glass a finish similar to the rippling currents of the sea.

They come in a set of four and would make a charming accompaniment to summer table schemes and garden parties. Imagine twinkling garden lights and candles reflecting in the textured amber glass.

Each glass holds 300ml.

Homescapes Scalloped Vase

Albertson Ceramic Table Vase

This statement vase has Ariel written all over it. The turquoise, scale-effect finish of the ceramic is directly inspired by underwater creatures and we love the mottled colours and textural qualities.

Pop an arrangement of dried flowers or pampas grass in it and display it somewhere with plenty of natural light for the range of colours to really stand out. It would work a dream in a bathroom too.

It measures 27cm x 16cm.

Flora Scalloped Duck Egg Blue Velvet Armchair

Flora Scalloped Duck Egg Blue Velvet Armchair Oliver Bonas

This scalloped velvet armchair from Oliver Bonas is a great choice if you're looking to add mermaidcore style to your home in one fell swoop (you could pair it with a velvet shell cushion too for double the impact).

There are seven shades to choose from with this elegant armchair but we think the Duck Egg Blue and Dusty Pink options are the best colours for a mermaidcore-appropriate space.

As well as adding charm to a living room, this plush armchair would look lovely in a reading corner or by a dressing table.

It measures 90cm x 74cm x 66cm.

Sea Shell Trinket Dish

Sea Shell Trinket Dish

We love these earthy-toned trinket dishes from Solidify Studio on Etsy. You could use them to hold a whole host of things; jewellery, lip balm, keys, and even use them as stylish soap dishes. They'd make beautiful table place settings for a wedding or special party too.

The shell-shaped dishes are handmade from concrete and are layered with non-toxic sealant to minimise discolouration and water absorption.

Each dish measures 10cm x 10.5cm.
