How to find the right bedding for you

Budget

Bedding can range from £20 to over £100, so having an idea of how much you want to spend on your sheets can help filter your options. In general, bedding with a higher thread count (how may threads are woven into a square inch of fabric) is more expensive. A higher thread count can result in a denser, more durable fabric, but it doesn't necessarily indicate quality with the quality of the fibre also playing a key role.

Fabric

As a soft, fairly breathable and easy-to-care-for fabric, cotton bedding is a popular choice. The price of cotton bedding can really vary but there are plenty of affordable 100% cotton bedding options around. Bamboo bedding has a silkier feel, and boasts better eco-credentials but tends to be on the pricier end of the scale. Linen can look especially beautiful, particularly if you're into laid-back luxury, and has the benefit of temperature-regulating properties.

Synthetic fibres such as polyester may not be as breathable, but you'll often find cotton blends that are a hassle-free, affordable option.

Allergies

If dust mites keep you up at night, investing in bedding with hypoallergenic qualities is a wise move. Bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic, and silk is another material with hypoallergenic properties.

Temperature

Stuffy sleepers will be on the lookout for bedding with temperature-regulating qualities which is where natural, breathable materials such as linen and bamboo bedding can come in useful. If you prefer cosy bedding to fight the cold, a thick flannel material can work well.

How many sets of bedding should you own?

This will of course depend on your preference for hosting and laundry routine. Two is the minimum, but if you've often got visitors, you'll want at least three sets of bedding so you have enough to use on rotation between washes. Having two to three spare sets always comes in handy, and takes the pressure off getting your linens washed and dried in time.

Think about the seasons too, and if you're a fan of festive bedding, or summery options, you may prefer to have at least four sets of bedding to suit the seasons.
