When we think of sustainable travel, our minds automatically jump to what kind of transport we should use to minimise the effect on the environment – but have you ever considered the impact of the items you pack in your suitcase? More and more of us are becoming aware that demand for cheap and disposable products are causing huge damage to our environment, and shopping more mindfully as a result.
When we’re on-the-go, it can be especially tempting to opt for throwaway items out of convenience – but a bit of forward-planning can make you a more eco-friendly traveller.
With that in mind, here are seven handy ideas to take the pressure off your purse and the planet.
1. Ditch the travel-size plastics
Organic citrus conditioner bar, £7.50, Authentic House
Packed with cocoa butter, jojoba oil and vitamin E, this nourishing conditioner bar is the way forward if you don’t want to squeeze mini plastic containers into a much-too-small resealable bag at the airport. Authentic House has a range of other eco-friendly hair and skincare products which are ideal for travelling with too – go check them out!
2. Bring a bottle
Lotta stainless steel bottle, £14.95, Rex London
Every year the UK uses 7.7 billion plastic bottles – that averages 117 per person. So investing in a reusable bottle you can fill at home and top up while you’re out and about is an easy way to join the fight against everyday waste. Not to mention, having a bottle on hand could save you hundreds of pounds in soft drinks!
3. Purchase a PowerPort
Anker PowerPort Solar, £59.99, Amazon
For all the convenience of a regular charger and then some, buy the Anker PowerPort Solar. This nifty gadget is a worthy investment, as it’s wireless, weather-resistant, easily portable and of course, is an eco-friendly way to solar charge your smart-tech appliances including iPhones, iPads and the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.
4. Invest in reusable wipes
Linen travel pouch with bamboo face wipes, £24, Helen Round
A fresh face doesn’t have to come at the expense of the Earth. This handy linen travel pouch contains a set of six reusable bamboo make-up pads and a super soft cloth so you can keep up a sustainable daily cleansing ritual.
5. Make an eco-friendly cuppa
Natural Elements eco-friendly putty travel mug, £6.99 each; Natural Elements eco-friendly lunch box, £7.99, both Kitchen Craft
A hot drink and a bite to eat are vital on a long journey, but put your purse away and do your bit for the environment by pre-prepping lunch and a warm brew you can store for hours with a reusable box and travel mug set. When you’re next in need of a hot drink at the service station, simply ask if your cuppa can be poured into your eco-friendly mug.
6. Do away with plastic
Bamboo travel cutlery set, £14.99, Wearth London
This lightweight cutlery set – perfect for picnics and camping trips – is made from sustainably sourced bamboo and includes a knife, fork, spoon, chopsticks, straw and a 100 per cent biodegradable straw cleaner made from coconut shell. Plus, it comes in a compact pouch so you can neatly fold it away and slot it back into your bag ready for your next trip.
7. Brush with bamboo
