There’s nothing like lighting a festive candle to make your home feel cosy during the countdown to Christmas!
Whether you’re looking for a luxurious treat or some affordable alternatives, here’s our round-up of the best Christmas and winter candles for 2020!
Freshly Baked Gingerbread, £44.99, Hampton & Astley
We’ve all been around one too many sickly-sweet candles, so you’d be forgiven for assuming that a scent calling itself Freshly Baked Gingerbread might be an addition to that overpowering club. But don’t be fooled! Hampton & Astley’s new Christmas candle genuinely smells like pulling a pan of warm homemade ginger cake out of the oven. The candle’s tempting wafts of ginger, allspice and vanilla are so natural, you’ll genuinely have to fight the urge to sink your teeth into it.
Stoneglow Eucalyptus & Lime, £9.99, Lakeland
If you like to fill your home with fresh, uplifting scents during the festive period, you’re guaranteed to love this Eucalyptus and Lime Candle from Lakeland. Combining subtle cinnamon, patchouli and amber with zingy pine and lime, it has the warming edge of a traditional winter candle, but with a crisp, citrusy twist. We love it!
By the Fire, from £36, Petits Rituels
Each Petits Rituels aromatherapy candle is intricately blended and handmade by artisan perfumer, Nathalie Allard, to provide a different therapeutic benefit. The By The Fire candle – a blend of cinnamon, clove, orange and lemongrass – is specially mixed to evoke feelings of warmth and happiness and allow you to feel safe and cocooned as the candle burns. It’s a perfect choice for those who want to restore a sense of wellbeing and relaxation over the hectic Christmas period – simply burn it for a minimum of three hours.
Spiced Noir Luxury Scented Candle, £30, Taylor Benfield
If you prefer warmth and spice over sweeter festive scents, this Spiced Noir candle from Taylor Benfield is the perfect winter candle for you. The warming wood and spice-based fragrance is inspired by the exotic scents of Malaysia and Indonesia – we’d liken it to the candles you’d find burning in a luxury hotel in New York. A full size is £30 but you really get what you pay for – the scent fills a room even before you’ve burnt it.
Fireside, from £20.24, Woodwick
This fireside scented candle from Woodwick is a must-have for any home at Christmas. Not only does it give off the scent of a warm, wood fire, but it also has a wick that crackles as it burns – it sounds just like heavy raindrops on a roof. If you’re looking to purchase this on online, be aware that although it appears grey on the website, it’s actually a soft muted green. It’s available in a number of sizes.
Surprise Snowfall, £23.99 for a large jar, Yankee Candle
What exactly does snowfall smell like, you ask? Well, in the case of this beautiful candle from Yankee Candle’s new Christmas collection, it’s a fresh, crisp fragrance with notes of silver spruce and citrusy verbena.
Carefully created to evoke memories of swirling snowflakes in crisp winter air, Surprise Snowfall is one of Yankee Candle’s more delicate and uplifting festive fragrances – it’s the perfect option if you like to swap spicy, cinnamon scents for those of fresh winter fruit and pine.
OSYNLIG range, £9, IKEA
We were thrilled to hear that IKEA was teaming up with Byredo founder Ben Gorham to create an exclusive range of scented candles. The OSYNLIG collection has finally launched, and we couldn’t wait to get our hands on some designer perfumery at a bargain price.
The range incorporates fragrances for all seasons. For winter, why not try Swedish Birch for traditional Nordic tones of wood and juniper, Firewood and Spice for smoky fireside vibes with hints of vanilla and roasted nuts, or Fig and Cypress (above), which combines a ripe, fruity core with fresh, woody notes.
Each of the 13 scents comes in a stoneware pot with its own colour-combo glaze, which is almost as delightful as the candle itself. Even better, we love the suggestion of using the empty container as a mulled wine mug.
