Antique decor - that is, a scheme which incorporates decorative elements considered 'antique' - is a wonderful style to try out in your home. Filling your home with one-of-a-kind items with their own history adds so much interest and character to a space, and lets you express your tastes in a way you simply can't do on the high street. Plus, by drawing on a variety of elegant items from past eras, you can create an overall look which is truly timeless, and resistant to the shifting popularity of come-and-go trends.

We spoke to Rachel Nott from our sister magazine Homes & Antiques to get the lowdown on what antique decor is all about and how to use it in your home.

What is antique décor?

Antique décor is essentially an interiors scheme that uses well-chosen antiques alongside contemporary pieces for more of an eclectic, lived-in look. While trends come and go, which can leave very up-to-date Instagrammable homes looking dated as quickly as one season blends into another, a layered look of classic contemporary furniture and accessories, blended with simply crafted antiques is one that will stand the test of time for years to come.

How to use antiques and mix them with your décor

Pieces to consider might be an antique pine or oak chest of drawers or wardrobe in a bedroom, mixed with a cast-iron bed and chic modern lighting; or an old butcher’s block in the kitchen which is worn with a pleasing patina and age combined with sleek marble worktops and Shaker cabinets; or perhaps an old leather club armchair in the living room.

Here experts Benedict Foley and Birdie Fortescue offer their top tips on how to style antiques, and mix old and new in your home

Are antiques expensive?

While you may think antiques are expensive, think again. There are many bargains to be had at auctions or antiques fairs as well as the usual suspects eBay, Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace. What’s more, buying second-hand, or 'thrifting' as it's called in the USA, is a green way to shop, and antiques are one of the most eco-friendly ways to furnish your home, making them good for your bank balance as well as the environment.

What's the difference between 'antique' and 'vintage'?

Generally antiques are considered to be anything over 100 years old, while vintage is something older than 20 years but less than 100. Here are more detailed guides to vintage and antiques
