Turn a blanket or rug into a cool seat cover

Transform a tired rug into a chic upholstered seat cover

For those who want to create a welcoming entrance without damaging the walls, this bench is the perfect go-to project! Not only does it blend style and function, it’s also incredibly easy to make with just a few tools to hand and a couple of hours of your time. What’s not to love?

You will need

  • Plywood sheet (25cm x 90cm)
  • Rug
  • Foam cushion
  • Foam wadding
  • Four hairpin legs
  • Power drill
  • Eight screws
  • Scissors or a craft knife
  • Staple gun

Step 1

Cut the plywood to size or ask for the hardware shop to cut it for you. Trim the foam cushion to fit the plywood; it’s best if the foam cushion is about 2cm smaller on all sides to enable the rug to fit over this and the plywood.

Step 2

Cut the foam wadding so that it’s large enough to cover the foam cushion. Wrap around the plywood and staple underneath. Place the rug upside down and arrange the wadding, then the foam cushion, then the plywood on top.

Step 3

Use a staple gun to attach the rug to the plywood. Take your time with this step by planning out the corners and making sure the rug and top design fit to the bench.

Step 4

Drill pilot holes into the underside of the bench to attach the legs, then screw them into place. Your boho bench is ready!
