These delicate LED candle lanterns are really easy to create, and make a fantastic homemade Christmas gift.

You will need:

  • A4 transparent vellum
  • Glue dots for vellum
  • Flower-shaped craft punch
  • Fiskars eyelet tool
  • Drawing pencil and paper
  • White watercolour pencil
  • Craft knife Cutting mat
  • Metal ruler

Step 1

First, draw out your floral design on a piece of paper, using the main image for inspiration. Once you’re happy with it, trace your design onto a sheet of vellum – a white watercolour pencil is ideal for this, as you can lightly sponge off the lines once you’re finished.

Step 2

Use a craft knife and cutting board to cut out the design from the vellum – to keep the lines as crisp as possible, cut each line continuously, rather than stopping and starting. Next, use an eyelet punch to decorate with tiny holes, if desired. Alternatively, instead of creating cut-out designs on your vellum lanterns, you can build up soft shadow designs. Simply punch motif shapes using the flower punch from spare sheets of vellum and stick them onto the lantern while it’s flat.

Step 3

Once the lantern design is finished, create the cylinder shape by overlapping the short sides of the paper. Stick them in place with the vellum glue dots, then place an LED candle inside.
