You will need:

  • Shell template (see below)
  • Velvet fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Cotton thread
  • Polyester stuffing
  • Needle
  • Gold thread
  • Paper
  • Glue

Step 1

Print the half shell templates (below) onto two pieces of paper. Carefully cut out and stick together to form a whole shell shape template.

Step 2

Fold the velvet fabric in half with right sides together and pin the template in place. Cut out, then remove the template.

Step 3

Pin the pieces right sides together again, and sew all the way round the edges leaving a small opening at the bottom of the shell.

Top tip

Use a rubber-tipped pencil to gently smooth out the curved edges of the cushion before it’s filled.

Step 4

Turn right side out and fill with polyester stuffing, making sure all the curved edges are filled. Neatly stitch up the opening.

Step 5

Hand sew the ridges of the shell on the front of the cushion with a needle and gold thread using backstitch.
